Gemserv awarded further work with the Carbon Trust Standard Company

The Carbon Trust Standard Company (CTSC), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Carbon Trust, launched Standard in June 2008. Its remit is to encourage good practice in carbon measurement, management and reduction by businesses and public sector organisations.
The Standard is designed to provide a robust, objective and consistent methodology for assessing corporate carbon performance, and assessment of an organisation’s achievement of the Standard is undertaken by accredited independent third-party assessors.
CTSC needed support in the development of the appropriate criteria and processes for the accreditation of assessors, and in the actual delivery of the accreditation scheme. Gemserv worked closely with the CTSC to identify the required criteria, the standards assessors needed to meet, the process of accreditation, and the administrative procedures required to ensure it was transparent, robust and auditable. Gemserv successfully undertook the delivery of the first round of accreditations.
A year on from the Standard’s launch 100 UK businesses have now achieved the Carbon Trust Standard and this number is expected to double over the next year as more businesses prepare for the Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) in 2010.
The CRC will take into account the fact that those who have already taken steps to reduce their emissions will find it harder and more expensive to make further cuts. One way it does this is to give additional credit to organisations that have achieved the Carbon Trust Standard, a kitemark that shows a commitment to continual carbon cuts.
