Connected Devices, Security and Data Privacy

Addressing the Connected Devices Security Challenge

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a computing concept that describes the interconnection of everyday devices (Things), allowing data to flow from the physical to the digital world and vice versa. This allows devices to be sensed and controlled across the existing network structure of the internet.

Communications within the IoT may be Person to Person (P2P), Person to Machine (P2M) or machine to machine (M2M). The potential applications of the IoT are endless and span a range of market verticals, such as industrial, domestic, energy, medical, retail, logistics and service industries, to name but a few.

A Connected Device, in its simplest form, is any electronic device equipped with a communication technology which allows it to exchange information via a network. Connected devices can range from simple sensors and actuators through to complex devices such as connected vehicles. Improvements in communications infrastructure combined with decreasing electronics costs and increasing processing power, has paved the way for the proliferation of the IoT.

Gartner estimates that the global market for connected devices and services is forecast to reach $2 trillion in 2017, with the number of deployed devices expected to be 8.4 billion, rising to 20.4 billion by 2020. Yet 80% of current devices are predicted to be inadequately secured. This paper sets the scene within the industry and discusses what the potential solutions are to securing this increasing complex landscape.
